Tenuta dell’Ugolino vintage notes

In short, the 2021 season was a dry season both during the winter-spring period and for the whole summer period, with the first excellent rains arriving after the middle of August.

In January and February, rainfall was below the average for the period and temperatures slightly above the average.

March, April and May were cold months with both average temperatures and rainfall below the period average, which delayed the budding of the vines for about a week.

In June, July and August there were high and fairly constant temperatures, above average, in particular in the month of July and the first ten days of August, with almost no rainfall throughout the period. This climatic trend has generated stress in the vines, which resulted in a stunted vegetative development, with small and slightly 'swollen' clusters and a consequent reduction in quantity.

After mid August, two beautiful rains arrived which also lowered the temperatures. Then in September the arrival of other rains led to a further reduction of temperatures, especially at night, with consequent significant day-night temperature variations and a consequent improvement in the vegetative activity of the vines.

At the end we harvested very healthy grapes, smaller than usual but of great quality, thus obtaining an excellent must, if with about 20-25% less compared to the average of the last year.

The harvest began at the end of August with the pick of the grapes for the Brut. Then from September 5th the harvest of the grapes for the Piaole began and from September 10th we collected the Balluccio cru grapes. The harvest ended on September 20th.
